3 Be or Not 3 Be…

March 23rd, 2007

Playstation 3 was released in Australia today, I can’t decide if I want to buy it. I have already resisted going out this morning to buy one. The question is, will I hold out till the price drops to around A$600 or will I crack and buy sooner. I would have thought a price drop might occur quickly to catch up with the XBOX 360, but I don’t want to wait more than 6 months.
The main reasons for not rushing out and buying one are 1. Price and 2. Go really great games to buy.
If I did go out and buy, I would probably get the Formula One game, or maybe even Call Of Duty 3.  I would hope to be one of the first 20 000 people to register in Australia so I can get Casino Royale on Blue Ray DVD for free. (Just that is very tempting)

Also If anyone reading this has a Mac and an IPod, I would like to know if the PS3 and the mac can move files via a network (I don’t even know if this is possible for a start) and if a Mac Formatted IPod can be plugged into a PS3 and used.

V8 Supercars 3 PS2 Game

March 4th, 2006

I just bought V8 Supercars 3 (It is called different names in different Regions, most countries it should be called Race Driver 3). This game comes from the makers of one of my favourite games from the PS1 was TOCA 2 Touring Cars from Codemasters. The “Race Driver” series has been the PS2 version of the TOCA franchise.

I bought the first in the series for the PS2 which was a disaster. It was very late being released and then it was buggy and had poor graphics performance. But I wanted to try touring car racing again and hoped that Codemasters would have sorted out the problems by the third game.

So far the Graphics and game play are good. Competition from other racers can be manually adjusted which means you can get tough competition if you want it. There are a large selection of tracks from around the world and the graphics quality is good. The Car quality and car damage is also really good. There can be up to 20 cars in one race. (This points out why I don’t like Gran Turismo, which only has 6 cars in a race and no damage)

However, this game suffers from the overkill of features. Instead of focusing on a Touring Car Championship (or a couple, like the V8s from Australia, the DTM from Germany and a British one) they have filled the game with loads of different smaller championships, so you don’t get to settle in one Championship. I remember spending a week on winning the British touring car championship and not knowning if I would win or not till I completed the 24 rounds. There was a lot of satisfaction in this, instead of spending a half hour here and there on 12 different championships. I think I mentioned this before about Burnout 3. Why do game makers keep putting in too much features and not having the substance for the real game.

Anyway, back to this game. Good Graphics, Good Cars, Good Championships, Good Sound, Good Game.

From Russia with Love on PS2

November 19th, 2005

I just complete From Russia with Love on my Playstation 2. Which is really disapointing considering I only bought the game three days ago. (And I was working on two of those days)

However it really is the next step in quality and gameplay from “Everything or Nothing”. However there is something special about that game.

From Russia with Love is one of my favourite Bond films, because it has a ‘real’ story which develops, great acting and a fantastic plot. Its a movie which could never be made now, the movie is too slow and there are not enough guns and explosions for today’s movie executives) Unfortuantely alot of these Guns and Explosions have been added to the game, which tears up the script from the original film (I haven’t read the book, but I guess I should).

There are some elements from the original film which are cool, but the character of Red Grant is no where near as cool as he was in the film. And they made him a super villian with a nuclear weapon, why?

Changing a Film to a game is hard when you consider a film is passive and you see the story from different character’s perspectives. This does not translate to a game, where you need to be active and yourself the whole time.

So should you buy it, if you loved Everything or Nothing and want more, then YES! Sure the game is short but I hope there is more replayablility. Something Burnout 4 doesn’t really have. Oh, and don’t trade in your old copy of EON, you may need it.

Sean Connery is great in the game, he delievers some great one-liners (not as lame as in EON). There are cool things like being able to Climb and jumb over low objects. There are some really cool levels too, the First one in London I really enjoy, then there is a great Factory one, and more… The Production Design is stunning, the sets really look like a clasic Ken Adam design, very very good!

So in conclusion, am I happy? Well I could be happier, but I am not disapointed, I might post a comment later on to give an indication of replayability.

Burnout 4

October 8th, 2005

I have been a fan of the Burnout series on Playstation 2 since the first one. I recently bought the latest game, “Revenge” and I have to say WOW.

The games are getting much faster and at times during a race I have no idea what I’m doing, I’m just going so fast there is no time to react to anything. This is cool! The game now allows you to smash in to the back of other cars without crashing your self (except for trucks and buses) plus you get rewarding for this. This takes the pressure off when driving at high speeds.

There are a few new game modes, but I think the best is still the Race. The Crash junction is still in the game, I just wish they made it faster to reset the junction and try again, I waste an huge amount of time just waiting, especially annoying when the junction is proving hard to win.

I’ve had the game around 2 weeks now and I am approching 80% completion.

I think it is worth it if you like mad driving games :-)
