Flash performance on Snow Leopard

August 29th, 2009

Here is some interesting performance observations I have mad since installing Snow Leopard.

Flash 10 in Safari appears slower.

However, if you are using Camino, Flash performance is significantly better. (maybe better than Leopard – just a feeling)

Firefox, seems about the same as before, although I don’t really like using it. Chrome is the same as Safari.

If you work with a lot of Flash apps and need the best performance, switch to Camino

Flex + Snow Leopard, the results…

August 28th, 2009

I have installed Snow Leopard… and now the Flex compatibility results.

Flex Builder 2 – FAIL.
Changing some configuration files did allow me to open Flex Builder, and I was able to compile some apps, but my large app with embedded images failed to compile.

Flex Builder 3 – SUCCESS
Unfortunately I had to buy Flex Builder 3… anyway… it appears to be fine.
On a separate note, when I tried to compile an app using the version 2 SDK, it put a Charting watermark on my app. Not happy considering I have the full version.

Flex Builder 4 Beta (latest) – SUCCESS
I didn’t try for long, but all appeared successful.

Mac: Use Camino – not Firefox

February 18th, 2007

Firefox on Windows is cool, it works, its better than IE, it looks Good. However the same can not be said for Firefox on the Mac.

It is Ugly, it looks Unfinshed, and it is just alful to look at (did I already mention that?). Anyway, I want to point out another Mozilla based browser which you should have a look at if you didn’t already know about it.

Its called Camino (Official Site)

Camino uses the Gecko rendering engine, but unlike FireFox, camino uses Mac’s GUI controls, like Buttons and DropDowns, it also looks more like a Mac App. There is one catch, it doesn’t support Extensions. (If you need to, you can access a lot of settings by doing about:config)

I have been using Camino as my primary development browser for several months now, and I haven’t had any problems so far, I do go back to Firefox every now and then – when ever I need to use the Web Developers Toolbar that is. – oh, and I still use Safari for all my personal browsing…

But I really recommend using Camino, make the Switch Today.

New Mouse

February 4th, 2007

Logitech MX Revolution:
I recently bought a new mouse, a Logitech MX Revolution. So far after a couple of weeks I am very happy with the new mouse.

I had purchases an Apple Wireless Mighty mouse when it came out last year, however I don’t think the mouse design can stand up to heavy use. The Shape of the mouse is not comfortable for long use, the right click detection is poor and the biggest problem is that the Scrollwheel gets sticky and stuck after a few months of use.

So the new Logitech mouse has a big scrollwheel – so there should be no problems with it. It also has an ergonomic shape – so its comfortable to use and there are a variety of extra customisable buttons on the mouse. Plus it is rechargeable, no more batteries!!!

The major flaw with the mouse if the Mac Software. If seems a bit buggy but it got there in the end. It probably needs a little bit extra work though.
